Coming quickly is the Union’s tri-annual elections. This is the time for those who have 6+ months of service within the union membership to step up and nominate them self for a position in the union. Union representatives, Health & Safety representatives are positions that are carried out within the work place for the most part, but there are also other positions such as Executive Board Members.

We have two dismissal grievances in arbitration. On Thursday, February 26th, 2015, Roger and I met with the company to hear outstanding 2nd stage grievances. The grievers were present for their meetings and we will be receiving replies to each this week.

On January 9th, 2015, we had 30 bargaining unit employees laid off. To date, we have had a couple of people take early retirement and those jobs have been posted on the job posting board.
Update on Layoff Notices - January 12, 2015
By now many of you are probably aware that the employer is reducing the workforce. The employer has held meetings today at the workplace for both shifts.

We currently have 2 outstanding dismissals. One is referred to arbitration, the other we are still seeking resolution. With regards to grievances, in the future, we request that all grievances be signed by the griever for the purpose of ensuring proper settlements.

Currently, we still have 2 dismissals on the go. One is referred to arbitration. The number of first stage grievances are on the rise which consist mostly of policy grievances, wrongful discipline and pay issues. We have had no grievances heard at second stage since June 2014 despite the slotted time lines in the collective agreement.

Agreement Ratified! - July 10, 2013
The bargaining committee members of Mine Mill Local 598/CAW employed at First Nickel Inc. were able to bring a new, tentative agreement to their membership late last night. The bargaining committee is happy to report that the membership voted 94% in favour of accepting the terms of the new agreement.
Tentative Agreement Reached - July 4, 2013
Mine Mill Local 598/CAW have reached a tentative agreement with First Nickel Inc. A ratification vote meeting will be held on Tuesday, July 9th, 2013 at the Lionel Lalonde Centre in Azilda at 3:00p.m to 5:00p.m. and 6:00p.m. to 8:00p.m.
Ongoing Talks - June 14, 2013
Mine Mill Local 598/CAW have engaged in collective bargaining talks with First Nickel Inc. Although a new agreement has not been reached, both parties will resume talks during the first week of July. Both parties are optimistic of reaching a new collective agreement, however a new deadline of July 12th, 2013 at midnight has been set.
Strike Mandate Vote Results - June 12, 2013
Members of Mine Mill Local 598/CAW employed at First Nickel Inc attended a meeting last evening to hear an update on the progress of negotiations, and vote to give their Bargaining Committee a strike mandate. In a heavy turn-out at the polls, the membership voted 98% in favor of strike action should the current round of talks fail to produce a fair and equitable agreement for the Membership of this Local by the June 15th deadline.

Strike Mandate Vote - May 31, 2013
In order to call a strike or any form of job action, the Union must first hold a vote by secret ballot in which all members of the bargaining unit have the right to participate, and at least a simple majority (50% + 1) of those participating must indicate that they authorize the bargaining committee to call a strike.

Press Release - First Nickel Contract Ratified
A ratification meeting was held July 29, 2010 and the employees, who have been off work since October 2008 when the mine closed, voted in favor of the new collective agreement by 96%.

Out of Date Phone Numbers - April 29th, 2010
Last week when calling some of the employees, the Company and Union had a problem with some of the phone numbers as they were out of date.
Update for Negotiations - April 19th, 2010
We had a successful week of bargaining with the Company this past week. There is much more to be done yet but there is some good news.

Last week the company asked to resume negotiations. The tentative dates that we have so far are all in April.
Bargaining Update - Jan 8th, 2009
The negotiating team met with the Company again on the 6th of January. The Company would not move on any of the concessions they were asking for in the contract language so the negotiations are on hold until they get closer to finding some funding to reopen the mine back up.

I had wanted to send out a note to inform you that the Company had taken Union Dues one time too many off our last pay check and to inform all of the upcoming election and what work-related news I had to date. This letter unfortunately did not get out with the checks that were sent.

I’m sending out this note first to inform you that the Company had taken off Union Dues one time too many off our last pay check. While I was checking to make sure that FNI had remitted all the money that was owed to the Union I noticed this and it took awhile to sort it out and get you a check for what was owing to you.
