Arbitration Committee - June 2012 Newsletter

FRASER MINE

Postings were not awarded for embedded contractors. There are a lot of disciplines and the company is asking for a doctor's note when someone is off for 1 sick day. This matter is going to arbitration.

NICKEL RIM SOUTH

There are problems where the procedures are not being followed concerning embedded contractors. There is concern over the shift scheduling and we are still waiting for the company to set up meeting dates for us to discuss. There is a lot of contracting out going on at the site. Grievance procedures are taking a long time to administer.

SMELTER

There are problems with embedded contractors at the Smelter. We have grievances filed with respect to annual vacations/holidays and on call. There are many cases going to arbitration. The shut-down is now is progress.

STRATHCONA MILL

There is a welder position grievance currently at second stage of the grievance process which should be resolved soon. Embedded contractors and contracting out remain a problem at the Mill.

SKILLED TRADES

Meetings are ongoing with respect to dealing with many issues at all sites. Our next meeting is scheduled for July 9th, 2012.

OUTSTANDING ISSUES

1.) We are looking for other stewards at all sites. See Chief Steward if interested.
2.) There will be a survey mail-out in the early fall which will ask you what your demands are for the contract negotiations for February 1, 2013. These survey's are very important for your bargaining committee to determine priorities.
