January 24th, 2007
The Company and the Union are still meeting every day but progress is extremely slow. We have been successful the last few days in resolving some smaller issues, but the main issues of vacation and postings, especially at the Nickel Rim site, still needs to be resolved.
Your Bargaining Committee is committed to reaching a new Collective Agreement before the deadline, but it will NOT BE at the expense of not settling the issues that are critical to the membership.
The Company has been adamant that they would like a deal ratified and agreed to before Saturday, January 27th, 2007, but without these issues resolved and with still no monetary offer on the table, we find this Company’s objective very unrealistic. Our contract expires on February 1st, 2007 and it is OUR objective to get a collective agreement by that date.
We are unwilling to accept a contract that does not include better language, increased pensions, wages and benefits, given the enormous profits that Xstrata Nickel stands to make during the life of the next collective agreement
The membership’s mandate was loud and clear and this Bargaining Committee will achieve our goal of signing a new Collective Agreement.
We will continue to update the website and send information flyers to the worksite. Any progress and information will be communicated to the membership as it becomes available. Always be cautious of rumors; if you hear anything that has not come directly from the Union Leadership (website or flyers) it’s probably NOT FACT or TRUE. We will keep you updated.
